Maria Montessori describes
the 5 senses as the keys to knowledge. She speaks of them in
scientific and cultural terms:
|
"The senses are points of
contact with the environment, and the mind... |
| The child who has
worked with our sensorial apparatus has not only acquired greater skill
in the use of his hands, but has also achieved a higher degree of
perceptiveness towards those stimuli which come to him from the outside
world.... |
| The
sensorial material provides a kind of guide to observation, for it
classifies the impressions that each sense can receive: the colors,
notes, noises, forms and sizes, touch-sensations, odors and tastes. This
undoubtedly is also a form of culture." |
